Together Summer Projects | Enriched Children

Summer is full on and we are loving every minute of it.  Anyone else absolutely love having the kids blow off their energy outside all day long?

As I thought about how I'd like to connect with my own children over the summer, I wanted to try something a little different from my normal blogs.  Instead of a brief activity that you can do together during the day, I thought it would be great to connect over a summer-long project.

This "project" can vary and look different in so many ways.  It could last days to a week or even months.  It's entirely up to you and your children- the point is that you are doing it together and spending that precious quality time and making those memories!

This is what my boys and I decided to do followed by some ideas in case you need inspiration!
Summer long projects for kids
The rock that inspired us to paint our own!
We are part of a facebook group called "Nanaimo Rocks".  People in the community paint rocks and then hide them on trails, beaches, parks and so on.  Some rocks are a simple splash of colour while others are detailed designs- all with "nanaimo rocks" painted on the back.

We've had so much fun accidentally finding them on our outings, that we've decided to do some painting and hiding of our own. Already the boys are having a blast finding the "perfect" rock to paint and then of course going crazy with all the paint colours we have.  We'll probably keep this up throughout the summer- best part is hiding them during our walks or trips to the beach!

Together project ideas:

  • Bake or Cook- Learn a new recipe each week with your children!
  • Build a fort- this could be made from cardboard boxes that you collect and build upon during the summer
  • Read!  Set a goal of "X" number of books to finish by the end of summer
  • Blocks/Lego- depending on how much lego or blocks you own, slowly build a new project that you can work on every day
  • Puzzles- Although my boys would not have the patience, I know some of you that have children that can work on a 1000+ piece puzzle over the next month!
  • "Beautiful stuff" summer nature collections- during your summer trips to the beach and nature trails, take time to collect special treasures.  Find a special spot to keep them and add to a collage or mobile.  Keep adding throughout the summer!
  • A garden box- make one from scratch or buy one from the garden shop.  Pick out some seeds or flowers/veggie's and have fun watching them grow and taking care of them together over the next couple of months.
I hope some of these ideas have inspired you to work on a summer-long project with your children.  I'd love to hear what you'll be doing in the comments below!
